Nissan Micra, one of the most hyped and much awaited hatchback is under commercial production now, industry sources suggest. Micra would be the first made-in-India car by the company and the production would be based at the Oragadam plant near Chennai. The awaiting customers would only get a glimpse of the model once it is officially displayed in the showrooms on May 25, 2010.
The first car manufactured at the factory officially, was rolled out in the presence of Mr Toshiyuki Shiga, Chief Operation Officer, Nissan Motor India. Mr. Shiga seemed elated at the launch and commented that this official start of the car's production is indeed a new beginning for the company in India. India has been recognised as a key and important automobile market and this car has been especially designed keeping in mind the Indian taste and sensibilities.
Although the car is not officially launched, but the bookings have already started in advance, looking into the tremendous response the car received from buyers. The bookings are open across all dealer outlets of the company throughout India and can be easily booked with an initial amount of Rs 50,000. The sales would officially start from July 2010.
The Oragadam plant of the company has a production capacity of 400,000 units per year and is spread across a widespread area of 640 acres. The plant has drawn an investment of whopping Rs 45 billion. With a maximum capacity of 400,000 units, the initial production would indulge a capacity of 200,000 units.
Apart from the domestic sales in India, the car would also be exported to other key markets like Europe, Middle East and Africa. Indeed, it is speculated by the industry sources, that the Chennai plant is in the process of becoming the global hub for exports. July 2010 might witness the first round of production for exports and the first shipment is likely to be dispatched by September 2010.
