BMW, the German luxury carmaker is aiming to increase its footprint in the electric and hybrid vehicle segment. The company had launched the i3 and i8 in the global markets, and as per the media reports it is also considering these vehicles for the Indian car market. Rumors are on rife that BMW is also planning to develop i5 model, which will positioned between the i3 electric and i8 plug-in hybrid.
According to UK magazine WHATCAR?, the BMW i5 model is already in works. However, such a news is no longer a surprise, as the success of i3 has already boost up the confidence of German luxury car maker to offer more products in this segment. Moreover, the success of Tesla S model and i3 has helped the company and legitimized the need for premium electric vehicles. Few of the UK outlets also suggest that the Tesla S has already convinced many within the company that there is a huge possibility for a model larger than the i3.
The vehicle is likely to be named as i5, as it follows the regular BMW naming convention. The i5 model will address the issues with initial EV customers have, such as it will allow for longer commutes and extended road trips. The crossover will also offer more interior space and an SUV-like ride with the benefits of a plug-in hybrid or fully electric car. The vehicle will be developed using the CFRP and lightweight materials.
