Design disclosed for the first 1,000 miles an hour car

A British team which aims at breaking the recent land speed record has now disclosed the design of a car which is pencil-shaped and hopefully travels at more than 1,000 miles (1609 kms) an hour.

Industry sources say that three years of aerodynamic research is what has made it possible to construct this Bloodhound Supersonic Car. This car will be powered by a jet engine and a rocket with the record attempt slated for 2012 in South Africa.

Andy Green, the Royal Air Force fighter pilot, said that they had fixed the shape. He will drive the Bloodhound as it attempts to speed its way into record books. The pilot also says that they hope this car will cover 1000 miles an hour depending on its modeling and shape.

The team that is working on this new car is the same team which has the current record of 763 mph set in 1997. The team is led by Briton Richard Noble. The car has the combination of a Typhoon fighter's jet engine and a Falcon rocket. It will develop 135,000 horse power or 180 times the power of a Formula 1 car.

The team also says that their mission is not only to break the land speed record but they also want to inspire the next generation of engineers and technologists. The project was announced in October 2008 at the Science Museum in London.
