General Motors India, the Indian wing of world's second largest car maker GM, has initiated the process of research and development (R&D) to mark its debut in the small car segment of the country. The company will work in tandem with its Chinese partner SAIC to come-out with the best way to produce a low-cost fuel-efficient car in the Indian market. It is expected that a major chunk of manufacturing input would be localized to reduce costs. The car would compete head on with Tata Nano, the current ruler in the low-cost car segment.
It is also speculated that after analyzing the response of the Indian buyers towards this small car , the company may plan to export this car to international markets mainly Europe and South Africa.
