Gujarat to emerge an auto manufacturing hub in coming years

Published On Dec 12, 2011 06:07 PM By Ritesh

The western state of Gujarat is slowly emerging to be the manufacturing hub of the country. Statistics show that, in the coming years around half of the cars plying on the roads will be a crop from the state of Gujarat. In other words, while the rest of the nation has the cars produced on one hand, Gujarat will handle the rest single-handedly. Tata Motors has a plant set up exclusively for its small car Tata Nano production followed by Ford Motors and now, the French car manufacturer Peugeot Citroen also took a jump on the band wagon. Even the Maruti India's proposed plant is in the pipe-line with land acquisition plans already on the go for the manufacturer.

What is it that is working out for Gujarat with huge fervour. Michael Boneham, the President of Ford India for example is the one to sing praises on the industry friendly state of Gujarat. Gujarat is naturally fraught with oil and petrochemical industries. So, the workers are by default trained to suit the industry requirements. Though not specifically for automobile industry, which could turn out to be a slight let-down for car makers, the skilled staff is always the one high on board. Gujarat is blessed with a natural port which is a dream of every car manufacturer to have hassle-free exports or imports and is another plus. The environment in the state also does not need further help from the auto majors which is quite capable to cater to the industry needs efficiently.

The Gujarat government is also quite open towards the automobile manufacturers with some attractive incentives on cards to lure more and more companies to make a debut in the state. Ford India has an extensive set up in Gujarat to take over from its Chennai counterpart which rolls out 20 lakh units per annum seamlessly. Maruti India on the other hand also has the proposed Mehsana plant in pipe-line with the production capacity of as huge as 2 million units scheduled for a year. The new plant is supposed to be the largest in any standards among the three existing units in Gurgaon and two Manesar plants put together. As much as Rs 18 crore investment is expected from Maruti India towards the new unit. The land acquisition deal is likely to close within a month for the proposed plant in Gujarat.
