Plants of Maruti and Hyundai, two top most car makers in India, has secured a place in rankings announced by CSM Worldwide Inc, named as 'world's 10 largest car factories'. Where the Gurgaon plant of Maruti Suzuki India secured the 3rd place in the the rankings, the Hyundai India's Chennai plant secured 7th position. Where Maruti's Gurgaon plant produced 620,000 cars in total in year 2009, Hyundai's factory at Irungattukottai made 550,000 cars in the same period.
There is no plant in China like Maruti has in India, said Puneet Gupta, market analyst at CSM Worldwide. He added that the main reason of smaller output numbers at Chinese car plants is that the manufacturers of China manly focus on large and medium-size cars that require fewer units to achieve economies of scale which is a key contributor to profitability.
Most of the plants which secured positions in this ranking are the small car manufacturing plants including Fiat's Tichy facility in Poland which ranked sixth, Suzuki Motor Corp.'s Kosai plant which ranked fifth and Maruti's Gurgaon facility. Hyundai's factory at Ulsan, South Korea, which makes 1.2 million cars a year, secured the top ranking. In year 2008, Maruti's Gurgaon plant secured fifth ranking with producing 640,000 cars, while Hyundai did not make it to the Top 10.
