Car maker from Japan, Nissan is now planning to develop its first 'made-in-India' car in coming 5-6 years, and double the strength of engineers to around 4,000 people at its RD centre at Chennai, which it shares with its global partner, Renault.

"Our plan is to enhance the capability of our RD centre. Once we will have complete testing facilities, we will have the potential to develop the platform and will be able to roll out a vehicle indigenously from our RD centre in Chennai," NMIPL MD and CEO Takayuki Ishida told PTI.

The company also said that it is also resolving some of the issues related to its association with Hover Automotive India (HAI) which is the distribution and service partner of the company, there have been some problems inspected from a section of dealers.

Speaking about the locally made car for the Indian market, Ishida further said, "Engineers will be gradually hired every year depending upon number of platforms we want to develop and synergies with our global research centres. The RD manpower should be double or more than double in the next 5-6 years,"

On the focus for the RD centre, Ishida said: "The priority will obviously be to develop products for the Indian market. The centre will also work for other market in association with our other global research centres... We are still at initial planning stages."
