Despite the worldwide safety recalls, the global sales of Toyota jumped 16.9 per cent in the first half of the year, as a recovery in the Japanese auto industry strengthened on surging demand, said Toyota.

The Toyota group said that it sold 4,165,590 units for the six months to June. The Toyota group which includes brands like Daihatsu and Hino trucks gained 46.8 per cent to 4,356,597 units in its global production. A Toyota spokeswoman said that they are now monitoring a firm recovery from their slump last year. In the month of June alone, the global sales of the company rose 12.0 per cent to 723,512 units.

The sales of Toyota have shown a good growth since its last year's mid-crisis lows and this is despite the fact that the company is pulling around 10 million vehicles worldwide since late last year for safety issues. The other Japanese makers have also mentioned sales and production gains. This positive change is the result of the stronger global demand which is helping Japan's export-led recovery from deep recession.

Honda Motor, the second-largest maker said that its January-June domestic sales rose 20.4 per cent to 339,181 as global production for the six months got36.7 per cent to 1,801,329. The company, however, did not provide the global sales figures. Honda marked its 12th straight monthly increase of domestic sales in the month of June alone.

The third largest maker Nissan said that its global sales jumped 29.8 per cent to 2,007,609 for the period of six months. Nissan's global sales rose 23.7 per cent to 339,320 with production up 38.8 per cent, in the month of June.
