The upcoming Android 11 update has got the smartphone Google OS loyalists excited but there’s some exciting news for car enthusiasts too. With this update, comes a new feature for Android Auto.
Google’s Android Auto support page mentions wireless connectivity for phones with Android 11. This makes things extremely convenient as you do not even have to bother taking the phone out of your pocket to pair it with the infotainment app using a USB cable.
However, wireless connectivity, which was available on select Google and Samsung phones with Android 10, comes with some additional requirements:
-
A car or aftermarket receiver that’s compatible with wireless Android Auto.
-
A compatible Android smartphone with an active data plan and the latest version of the Android Auto app.
-
Any smartphone with Android 11.0 and 5GHz Wi-Fi. In the EU, smartphones must comply with additional regulatory requirements in order to use 5GHz Wi-Fi in the car.
-
A Google or Samsung smartphone with Android 10.0.
-
Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ or Note 8 with Android 9.0.
Android 11 is slated to roll out in September. With this new update, it is set to catch up with key rival: Apple CarPlay. Apple’s smartphone connectivity app already offers this feature along with an upcoming Car Key feature for the iPhone.
