The Indian roads are overwhelming with hatchback car models which justifies their popularity amongst Indian consumers. While crossing the Indian streets, one can say that out of 10 vehicles around 7-8 cars belongs to hatchback segment. This clearly indicates that the compact cars are the rulers of the Indian car market. Even the car manufactures feel most confident to start on any new venture or bring new models in this category of cars. If current scenario is to be considered, then auto companies simply bet on hatchback cars, and are pretty sure to carve a success story with these cars in the market.

However, there are various factors to base the success story of hatchbacks in India. The first obvious factor which every local buyer puts it on priority, is the affordability behind these machines. These models cost low due to the compact size and lesser engine capacity, which allows the manufacturers to comparatively price them cheaper. Well, these are optimally designed to serve every requirement that market demands. The next reason is the high fuel efficiency offered through hatchbacks. This makes Indians cash in on something that offers lucrative return in terms of fuel economy. The third big reason, is the compact size platform on which hatchbacks are developed. This makes them easily cruise through heavy traffic conditions which is a usual scenario in India. This also enables hassle free parking of the car.

After discussing the paramount factors in the success of hatchbacks in India, it makes auto manufacturers continue their business in this segment. The falling year will watch few new launches in this segment. We bring you the list of upcoming hatchbacks in 2014.

Maruti Suzuki YL7 (A-Wind Concept)

A-Wind is stated as the replacement to the out-going Maruti A-Star. The company has already unveiled the concept of the same model, while the production version is expected to be showcased at 2014 Indian Auto Expo. With improved looks and dynamics, the company has high hopes on the success of this model. Codenamed as YL7, the vehicle features a 996cc 3 cylinder petrol motor which is mated to a CVT gearbox. This would be certainly be spacious and comfortable with the external dimensions measuring, 3600mm x 1600mm x 1540mm (length x width x height), and wheelbase of 2425mm. Considering its interiors, there will be ample of space. Elements such as a touch-screen display, leather wrapped steering wheels & gearknobs enhance the cabin.

Chevrolet Beat facelift

Chevrolet had introduced Beat in 2010, since then it has been doing well in the market. The same hatch is going to be launched as a facelift, and might show up at next year's Indian Auto Expo. The upgraded model will receive quite a few cosmetic changes, while at the mechanical front it will remain the same. The car is yet under covers, but it seems like it has received a new front bumper, newly designed grille and restyled foglamps.

Maruti Swift facelift

One of the top selling hatchbacks in India, Maruti Swift is soon going to receive updates to its exteriors as well as interiors. The competition levels in the B+ segment is stirring up, and so to retain the popularity, Maruti will bring facelift of Swift model. The 2014 model will get LED day time running lights embedded in fog lamps, LED roof mounted lamp, restyled front bumper and 16-inch alloy wheels avaialble in the top variant. Datsun Go

Nissan's low cost brand, Datsun will soon be showcasing a range of vehicles for the Indian market.  The company has revived this brand after 32 years and has stepped in the emerging markets with a stronger presence. Datsun Go will be placed in the hatchback category of cars, and will be the first vehicle from several products of the company to walk down in India. The vehicle will share lot many components with Nissan's regular hatch, Micra, but in comparison will certainly be more spacious. Under the hood, the Go will be powered by a 1.2-litre petrol motor which will be tuned to offer better fuel efficiency.

Honda Jazz

Honda Jazz could not gain much popularity in India, and the only reason was its unjustifiable pricing. As per the Indian market, this hatch was introduced with a steep price tag which did not go done to well with the consumer indicating that the launch was a wrong step taken by Honda at its time. Moreover, the concept feature rich premium hatchback was at infant stage so it could not lure more customers. But over the past few years, the scenario has changed and premium hatchbacks are more popular in the market. So, this time the new Honda Jazz will be pitched against the likes of Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, and Fiat Punto. It will get powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, and is likely to get the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine.

Tata hatchback- project Falcon

Tata is bringing its potential hatchback model which is codenamed as 'Falcon 4'. This will eventually replace the regular Tata Vista, and will show up in both petrol and diesel variants. The 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet diesel is carried forward from Vista, while the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol is all-together a new engine developed by the company. Apart from these, cosmetic changes will also be done which includes new front fascia, repositioned number plate and newly designed tail-lamps.

Abarth Punto

The Italian manufacturer, Fiat is also geared up to bring its new performance based hatch - Abarth Punto by next year. While it is presumed that the company may choose 2014 Indian Auto Expo to showcase this model. The new hatch will get a 1.4-litre T-Jet engine, the same that powers Fiat Linea T-Jet model. With this, Abarth would be the first hot-hatch to propel massive power output of 110bhp. In terms of design, it clearly illustrates the popular Italian design which would attract many buyers.
