Like Audi A Series - A1 to A8, the company's SUV range is also following the same route, and is working on its smallest SUV Q1. The baby SUV will directly compete against Nissan Juke, and will be positioned as a more upmarket compact sports utility vehicle. This vehicle will join the Q3, Q5 and Q7, which will later be joined by the Q8 SUV. It is expected to come by the early 2016.
The new Q1 crossover will be based on the VW Group's famous MQB platform. The smallest version of this versatile architecture will be used to develop the baby SUV, which will also underpin the all-new 2015 VW Polo and next-generation 2016 Audi A1. The company is also working on Q2, which is based on the Crosslane Coupe, revealed at the last year's Paris Motor Show.
The Audi Q1 is expected to be a four-metre car with around 1,750mm width and 1,570 height. With such dimensions, the vehicle will be smaller than the Juke and will target the masses. It will be a front wheel drive model, however the company could also offer the Quattro all-wheel drive as an option.
The entry level model is likely to be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo engine that also does duty in the VW Up!. The other engine options could be a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol, and the newly formulated 1.4-litre TFSI petrol that also powers the A3 e-tron. There will also be a plug-in hybrid system in Q1. The top ranging model is likely to get a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops 200bhp.
The diesel version of the Q1 will get a new 1.4-litre TDI and a higher-powered 1.6-litre TDI. All the engines will be mated to a six-speed manual transmissions as standard, however it is also speculated that the company could also fit the new VW's 10-speed DSG.
It is speculated that the entry level Q1 could be priced around £16,000 (Rs.1571339.09).
