The world finally gets to set eyes on the hotly-anticipated Aston Martin & Red Bull hypercar, the manic AM-RB 001
As we had reported earlier, Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing (Formula1) are working together on a hypercar which will redefine the boundaries of what a car do. And finally, they have revealed this car - codenamed “AM-RB 001.” As one can expect from this holy merger of one of the best car marques and one of the best Formula 1 teams, the 001 looks astonishing and is expected to be crazy fast. It will be produced at Aston Martin’s Gaydon facility and the total units will be between 99 to 150 road cars, which is inclusive of all prototypes and 25 track-only versions. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2018.
The 001 is built with a lightweight carbon fibre structure and uses advanced body aerodynamics to create downforce. The new design enables much of this downforce to be generated from the underfloor. The car looks like no other in the world - much like it is still a concept, but is dripping with the essence of an Aston Martin. Not a lot of technical information has been revealed, but what we know is that the car will have a new, mid-mounted, high-revving, naturally aspirated V12 engine, which will achieve a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio; 1 PS per kilo of weight.
Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing’s Chief Technical Officer, says of the AM-RB 001 project: “I’ve long harboured the desire to design a road car. The formation of Red Bull Advanced Technologies brought me a step closer to realising that ambition, but I believed we should work with an automotive manufacturer. Aston Martin was at the top of my list. The synergy between Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin is clear. I knew Red Bull Racing had the ability to handle the pure performance aspects, but Aston Martin’s experience of making beautiful, fast and comfortable GT cars is of great benefit to the project. I’ve always been adamant that the AM-RB 001 should be a true road car that’s also capable of extreme performance on track, and this means it really has to be a car of two characters. That’s the secret we’re trying to put into this car - the technology that allows it to be docile and comfortable, but with immense outright capabilities”.
We can't wait to find out the capabilities of this car. With the essence of Formula 1 embedded in its DNA, the car will be a fierce competitor to the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918.
