BMW i5 to debut in 2015

After getting an overwhelming response from i3 electric car and i8 plug-in hybrid, BMW is planning to expand its i-brand in the coming years. The company has already registered the trademark for the i1 through i9 models. It is expected that the next model in BMW i family will be an electric vehicle.
We earlier reported that BMW i5 already in works, and it seems like the model will be introduced in the mid of this decade. It is rumored that the new model will be more family oriented, with larger cabin and trunk space. According to media reports, the company believe that by adding some more legroom and rear overhang, they can develop a capacious family EV longer than a MINI Countryman.
BMW i3 uses a separate chassis, which makes the development of i5 an easier and cheaper job than stretching a normal steel monocoque car. Only thing is the lengthening of the car, which can be done by increasing the chassis's longitudinal aluminum extrusions. The company only needs to re-engineered the rear door structure.
It is still unclear whether the new BMW i5 will be powered by a more powerful electric engine, but we expect to get the same i3 engine. The new member of BMW i brand will make its debut in 2015.
