BMW India had expressed its desire to turn numero-uno in the premium sedan segment in India last year, which it achieved comfortably by overtaking its arch rival Mercedes-Benz. In the journey to retain its top slot BMW seems quite confident. The new BMW India President Andreas Schaaf said that they are happy with the fact that the company has captured the top slot, now their aim is to retain the position and to grow further.
Dr.Schaaf, head of BMW's operations in India said that they have always found India to be a great land full of opportunities. The company would face a tough time retaining its top slot position as there is bound to be an external pressure. He added that he is taking this as a challenge and with the evident customer research reports showing that BMW is the most preferred premium car brand in India, his hopes are gaining support.
BMW has managed a great core team of marketers and researchers. Dr. Schaaf studied business administration at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and prior to heading India's operations were the chief of marketing for BMW Korea. BMW is the leader of automobiles in Russia and the region would be handled by Mr. Kronschnabl. Mr. Kronschnabl, was heading the BMW operations in India before Dr. Schaaf took over. He had not only built the BMW brand, setting up sales and service networks, but also took the Munich-headquartered company to the numero uno position.
BMW India had a long seen dream of beating all its competitors in India and develop as the leading brand in premium car segment in India. In 2009, BMW attained the numero Uno status after beating Mercedes-Benz with a sales figure of 3,619 units. In the year 2006, the company had a market share of only 9 percent which has now grown to an impressive 40 percent.
After achieving the top slot, BMW India has bigger plans for the year 2010. It wants to achieve a sales target of 4000 units and also wants to expand its presence to the Tier II and Tier III cities of India.
