The sales figures of sub-4 metre SUVs continued to drop in the month of August despite the resurgence of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. That said, the recently launched Hyundai Venue is still the highest seller, but it too saw a slight dropoff in demand. The biggest month-on-month losers in the segment though, were the Nexon and XUV300. The segment sales shrunk by six and a half per cent overall as compared to July 2019.
Here’s a detailed look at how each SUV in the segment performed in August 2019:

Hyundai Venue: Three months since its launch, the Venue has been reporting strong demand and managed to become the current segment leader too. While the sales numbers stay well above 9,000, it did see a 2.53 per cent drop in month-on-month growth. It currently commands 37 per cent of the market share.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza: The Brezza used to be the undisputed king of the sub-4 metre SUVs, but its sales numbers have taken a heavy fall, with the July figures amongst its lowest ever. However, the demand shot up again in August with sales of over 7,000 units, which is a month-on-month growth of 34 per cent. The Brezza’s market share has halved, year-on-year, since the entry of newer rivals like the Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300.
Ford EcoSport: The EcoSport moved up to become the third most popular sub-4m SUV in August with just under 2,900 units shipped. It still saw a decline of8.12 per cent month-on-month as the automotive downturn continues.
Mahindra XUV300: Mahindra was the first new sub-compact SUV of 2019 and used to average well over 4,000 units a month until August 2019. Its demand suffered a month-on-month fall of 43.27 per cent with just over 2,500 units shipped, making the XUV300 the biggest loser this month.
Tata Nexon: Tata’s SUV saw an almost 32 per cent drop in month-on-month demand with less than 2300 units shipped. The Nexon was the second-least popular model in its segment in August 2019.
Mahindra TUV300: The TUV300 stays at the bottom of the sub-compact SUV segment and while it saw a -5.61 per cent month-on-month growth, Mahindra still shipped over a 1,000 units of it.
