Chevrolet Beat to be powered with SMARTECH

General Motors India launched SMARTECH powertrain recently, its first made in India engine. And now the US based auto mobile company is planning to power Chevrolet Beat with its 1.2 litre SMARTECH mill. The SMARTECH has been developed by Technical Centre of GM in Bangalore hand in hand with Talegaon the new powertrain unit of GM. The news was revealed by a top official from the Indian arm of GM today 04 February.

The hatchback Chevrolet Beat is one of the most well known auto mobile from the company which will now be affixed with SMARTECH powertrain manufactured in India. Chevrolet Beat in India comes with a price tag of Rs 3,55,000 to Rs 4,66,324 ex showroom, New Delhi. The company coming with its own technology, it is expected that it may trim on the price of the car. Currently it gives competition to the well established car models such as Maruti Alto, Maruti Ritz, Maruti Wagon R, Hyundai Santro, Hyundai i10 and the likes. Karl Slym- President and Managing Director at General Motors India during the launch of “SMARTECH” revealed that Chevrolet Beat diesel version will be unveiled by the year end.

When quizzed about the expansion plans from Mr Slym he disclosed that GM India is planning to launch light commercial vehicle. It is likely to happen by the end of this current year or early part of 2012. GM owns a manufacturing facility at Halol in Gujarat includes a capacity of 85,000 units is also expanding the production capacity. Mr Slym while he was revealing the company's future plans and he also stated that the auto company is expected to increase the yearly production capacity to one lakh units.

General Motors marked a growth of 60 per cent for the last year in comparison to Indian auto sector which switched to 30 per cent of growth. Mr Slym said that GM has already invested Rs 5000 crores in the domestic auto sector and is keen on churning out more from India.
