The Punto’s successor, the Fiat Argo, looks sharp and contemporary and will take on the baton from its over-a-decade-old predecessor!

Meet the Fiat Argo, which in all probability, will replace the Fiat Punto EVO in India like it will do the same in Brazil. Fiat has revealed the much awaited Argo in a set of official pictures ahead of its full unveil later this month in Brazil. The Punto has served a long time in Fiat’s stable and it will now be replaced globally (still selling in select markets, including India) by the Argo.

The mystery behind the new name!

If it had carried the ‘Punto’ moniker forward then it would technically be the fourth-generation Punto. However, Fiat decided not to carry forward the 'Punto' label and renamed its successor as ‘Argo’. According to the Italian automaker, ‘Argo’ is taken from the famous ship of Jason and the Argonauts in Greek mythology, which is also a large constellation in the Earth's southern sky.

Design

Fiat Punto EVO

The overall design of the Argo is diametrically opposite to the Punto’s. The Italian flair that the Punto flaunts is rather subdued under its sharp and contemporary silhouette. Nonetheless, the Argo looks fresh and competitive in the cut-throat competition in its segment globally.

It gets Fiat’s latest grille design, which is also seen on its elder sibling, the Tipo hatch (on sale in Europe). This grille design is also present on the Abarth 124 Spider and there's a subtle hint of it on the Fiat 500 facelift as well. The grille is flanked by swept-back double barrel headlamps, which are LEDs (similar to the 2017 Honda City and the upcoming Jazz facelift) as seen in the teaser video, and there are LED daytime running lights as well.

The official pictures are perhaps of the top-spec, performance-oriented version of the Argo, which might be sold as the Abarth version in India. Notice its alloys, which appear to be an evolved (read: mutated!) version of the current Abarth Scorpion alloy wheels. Also, it gets red accents on its bumpers to show that this is the go-fast version.

There’s a side cladding, including the wheel arches, much like the discontinued international Abarth Punto. The rear gets a diffuser, which has a trapezoidal exhaust tip. The split-wrap-around tail lamps are similar to the Tipo hatch. It flaunts a huge ‘FIAT’ moniker at the centre, reminiscent of the old Fiat models. There's a spoiler as well.

Indian debut

The Argo will be revealed completely in Brazil in coming days along with its prices. Though not confirmed for India, we believe that it might be launched in the country by 2019. The Brazilian version will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 1.3-litre and 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines. If launched in India, expect the Argo to get familiar 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel and 1.4-litre T-Jet turbo petrol mills.
