CarDekho has been constantly updating you about the re-launch plans of the Gurkha SUV for quite a long time, and now Autocar India reports that the rugged SUV is finally launching on Februray 15,2013. Force Gurkha 4x4 which has been doing test runs in India for sometime now, is based on the Mercedes Benz G-Wagen's legendary platform, however it would initially have the BS III compliant version, BS IV would come later.

Not many people know, but the SUV was sold in India in the past, but possibly because of lack of service network and outdated looks and technology ,which compelled the company to phase out the vehicle suddenly about 4 years back. But now when Force has been investing a lot on dealer network expansion, technology and research, we can expect the SUV to do well this time around.

Now when Mahindra & Mahindra launched a premium yet off-roading capable SUV in the form of Thar, a highly equipped, comfortable yet rugged SUV is what the need of the hour, and Force seems going the same way. The all new Gurkha gets new styling and interiors, while the engine too has been changed, this time it is the Mercedes Sourced 2.6-littre OM616 diesel engine that churns out the maximum of 81bhp and torque of 230Nm.

So the robust platform along with a Merc sourced engine with four wheel drive compatibility give the Force Gurkha some impressive specifications. Also, the Gurkha is known to be a great off-roader that offers a hard top design, so more safety to its passenger. The closest competitor of Force Gurkha 4x4 will be Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, however if priced well, it can give a tough competition to India's top selling SUV, Mahindra Bolero as well.
