The Indian automaker Force Motors has finally launched the much awaited Gurkha SUV in India, which is based on the Mercedes Benz G-Wagen's legendary platform, however it has initially come in the BS III version, BS IV compliant version would come later. Launched both in the two wheel drive (2WD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) versions, the Force Gurkha has come out in a total three variants- 2WD soft top, 4WD soft top and 4WD hard top, priced at Rs 6.25 lakh,  Rs 8.35 lakh and Rs 8.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively.

All the three variants of the Force Gurkha derive their power from the Mercedes- Benz sourced 2.6-litre turbo diesel OM616 unit, which produces the maximum power output of 81bhp and torque of 230Nm mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. While the soft top version of the 2013 Gurkha accommodates 6 adults comfortably, the hard top version is a five-seater.

2013 Gurkha which will compete against the Mahindra Thar, only has BSIII compliant versions at the moment, however we might see the BS IV compatible version by the last quarter of 2013. The features offered on the new Gurkha include Fog lamps, refreshed dashboard and steering wheel,  revamped head lights and various others. Moreover having the 29.5 inches wheels, intake snorkel for water wading and 210mm of ground clearance make it one of the most compatible entry level off-roading capable SUVs.

Mr. Prasan Firodia, MD Force Motors stated, “The vastly superior gradeability and its ability to negotiate undulating terrain makes the Gurkha an ideal vehicle for ‘off road’ conditions. The macho looking Gurkha has timeless classic appeal that would interest off-road enthusiasts across the nation.”

Not many people know, but the SUV was sold in India in the past, but possibly because of lack of service network and outdated looks and technology ,which compelled the company to phase out the vehicle suddenly about 4 years back. But now when Force has been investing a lot on dealer network expansion, technology and research, we can expect the SUV to do well this time around.
