Big! Bad! Bossy! SUV segment defined simply. And these three words are the ones that we Indians like the most about the Sports Utility Vehicles. Let alone what they can do in their flesh and bone in off-roading to be precise, we just like the don’t-mess-with-me image of a UV. As most of us seldom take our mud bashers off the tarmac. But this doesn't make our new car buying list devoid of these bruisers and the SUVs we are mentioning here will only make your list longer.
We will be enlisting the cars with 4x4 systems, only the ones that are meant to get you into trouble and then out of it, yes the real off-roaders.
Ford Endeavour
After a long sleep, this true SUV from Ford’s pavilion is going to wake up again with its all new avatar, coming near October 2015. Though, the new Endeavour is based upon Ford global product, the Ranger pickup, it will still be a fresh vehicle for India. Then there are the company's latest design cues to cherish about. The majestic nose gets the trapezoidal grille, projector headlamps, skid plates on bumpers with integrated foglamps upfront and reflectors at the rear and a muscular bonnet to round up things. The sides get the massive wheel arches with a huge travel gap for the tyre to move freely around while off-roading. On the inside, it will be getting contemporary carvings to the dashboard and paneling coupled with Ford’s 8-inch infotainment system, the SYNC2.
Under the hood, it is expected to get two engine options to select from, a 2.2 litre 148bhp and a 3.2 litre 197bhp, both diesel. Transmission of this power will be done using a 6-speed manual in the former while 6-speed auto in the later. Moreover, there will be techs like the Hill Hold Assist, Hill Ascend, Hill Descent and terrain response to help you explore the road less traveled.
Chevrolet Trailblazer
Another from an American manufacturer, Trailblazer will set a new standard for the vehicles of its class. And Chevrolet has made sure that this brute doesn’t go unnoticed by giving it a mammoth size with dimension as 4878x1902x1847 (LxBxH), making it the largest of this segment. Adding to this sheer size is the signature Chevvy nose that gets the twin grill topped by that aggressive bonnet. The side profile feature understated wheel arches, large side windscreens and a wraparound rear windscreen. The rear LED tail light cluster and front projector headlamps are expected to remain standard as in certain markets abroad.
On the inside, Trailblazer will get MyLink infotainment system, first time for India, ensuring that all the vital controls stay in your command. It will be getting segment’s best interior room and will seat 7 people.
Under the hood could be the latest 2.8 litre Duramax diesel that produces 197bhp of power and a hefty 500Nm of torque and will be mated to an automatic with no option of manual.
Mahindra Thar
The homegrown manufacturer is prepping up an all new Thar that will exhibit more userfriendly interiors, slightly bettered exteriors and notched up underpinnings. On the inside, this rugged machine will get a refreshed dash. Reports are that it incorporates dual tone beige and grey scheme, circular housings around the tachometer and speedometer dials. Then there will be chrome accents on the interior trims, a new steering wheel, better looking A/C vents and utilities like cup holders. Power could come from the popular 2.2 litre mHawk diesel that may be used in this upcoming SUV. To support its off-roading credentials, it might get limited slip differential this time and a better gear ratio distribution for off-road performance.
Audi Q7
To cheer up India’s luxury SUV buyers, Audi will bring the latest generation of Q7. Despite mixed comments against and in favor of the latest Q7, it might just do the right job for the German manufacturer. This is because it has lost a massive 325 kg of weight, leading to its skinny looks, but then it has gained 26% efficiency than the current one and increase of 1.5 second for doing 0-100 km/h sprint. To do so, it will get the 3.0 litre TDI V6 engine producing 272 bhp and 600 Nm of power and torque respectively.
The insides are designed to make a statement of their own, a cleaner and more elegant setup. Furthermore, a host of techs to assist you through your journeys, features like advanced infotainment system, trackpad on the central tunnel, a massive instrumentation cluster that could be customized accordingly. While the exteriors are typical Audi with smooth creases denoting its gentle yet powerful presence, but the single frame brushed aluminum grill up front flanked by unique adaptive headlights, exhibits real rocket science.
