GM India bets big on Chevrolet Beat Diesel

The General Motors India is all focused to launch the Chevrolet Beat Diesel on July 25th of this year in the Indian Auto market. Karl Slym, the President and Managing Director of General Motors India remarked that with the highly unstable diesel and petrol prices in India, Chevrolet Beat Diesel is about to create a revolution in the small car segment in India with its exceptionally good engine capacity and fuel economy for a small car. He also expressed that, General Motors India sold about 1.1 lakh cars last year and expects to sell about 1.4 lakhs this year with a growth margin of 30%. Slym, who was in Coimbatore for a new dealership with two attached workshops, apparently the 250th in the country, they hope to increase their sales and service network to 300 by the year end due to the excessive demand.

Mr Slym, speaking about the production capacity of their Halol pant in Gujarat and Talegaon plant in Maharashtra, said that they intend to add another 1.4 lakh cars production to its current one lakh cars in Gujarat; and Maharashtra facility which has 1.4 lakh cars production capacity in the first phase, could produce 3 lakh units by the end of second phase in another 18 months.

As for the investments, Mr Slym commented that the General Motors has invested about $ 1.5 billion in Indian manufacturing plants and another $250 million is in the pipeline, which would be distributed among both the plants.He also informed that around 2, 500 engineers are currently employed in the Bangalore foundation for design and development and they are able to meet 90% of their global requirements from India alone, but hardly exporting more than 3% to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. He has ruled out any possibility of setting up a facility in Southern India.
