General Motors has announced that the company will plan to build its own electric motors for hybrid and electric vehicles. Currently some companies are supplying these electric motors to GM and now the company intends to make it in house, to improve reliability and quality and to lower the cost as well.
However the company has not said anything about the numbers of the motors and the place were it will build them but has told that it will invest more than $246 million.
Earlier in mid 1990s GM has built electric motors for its electric car EV1 and the company has been developing new electric motor since 2003. By manufacturing its own electric motor GM will become the first US-based automaker to manufacture the motors on its own.
The electric motors manufactured by GM will be debuted in 2013 on rear-wheel-drive, two-mode hybrid vehicles and they could also be placed in all-electric and fuel-cell cars.
Tom Stephens, GM's vice chairman of global product operations, said that they are using electric motors to reduce the dependency on oil and to cut emissions.
