We put the City Hybrid through our usual efficiency run to see if it can match Honda’s impressive claim of 26.5kmpl
Honda introduced the City e:HEV in May 2022 as the most affordable mass-market hybrid car in India. While it has since lost that title to the new Toyota Hyryder, it is still one of the most frugal models on sale. The sedan is offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, an electric motor, a motor generator and a small Li-ion battery pack. The self-charging hybrid system automatically switches between three modes: pure EV, hybrid, and engine-only.
With a unit of the City Hybrid in our test fleet, we put it through our fuel efficiency runs to check how true it stays to the carmaker’s claims.
Before we go ahead, let’s get the technical details out of the way:
Engine |
1.5-litre Petrol |
Power |
126PS (combined) |
Torque |
253Nm (combined) |
Transmission |
e-CVT |
Claimed fuel efficiency |
26.5kmpl |
Tested fuel efficiency (City) |
20.15kmpl |
Tested fuel efficiency (Highway) |
23.38kmpl |
In our tests, the City Hybrid was short of its claimed fuel efficiency figure during both the city and highway runs, and by a fair margin.
Let’s see how it performs in mixed driving conditions:
Mileage |
City:Highway (50:50) |
City:Highway (25:75) |
City:Highway (75:25) |
21.64kmpl |
22.47kmpl |
20.87kmpl |
If you plan on driving the City Hybrid primarily within the city, expect it to return around 21kmpl. For those frequently travelling on highways, fuel efficiency will likely go up by approximately 1.5kmpl. However, if you intend on using it within city traffic and on the highway in equal measure, expect fuel efficiency to hover just above the 21kmpl mark.
Do note that these figures may vary depending on the road, driving style, climate, and the car’s overall condition. Also, if you own a City Hybrid, do share your findings with us in the comment section below. We would love to hear from you.
