The production began in Japan, back in 1963
Japanese carmaker Honda is counted amongst the most reliable automobile manufacturers across the globe. Even in India, it is one manufacturer that knows how to package a product to be completely dependable. Today, the company announced that it has reached a milestone of producing 10 crore cars worldwide. On this occasion, let’s take a walk down the memory lane to look at how the automobile manufacturer made it this far.
The journey began back in 1963, when Honda started the production of its first mass-production model - the T360 mini-truck - at the Saitama factory (now known as Honda Wako Building). In the same year, the Honda S500 sports car also rolled out of the production floor from another production plant - the Hamamatsu Factory - which is now a transmission factory. Honda’s first full-fledged automobile production plant was developed in the following year and it was called the Sayama Factory (now known as Sayama Automobile Plant).
The new plant began production of the S600 sports car and in 1967 the company commenced manufacturing the N360 - Honda’s first mini-vehicle model. Two years later, Honda started the production of the N600, a small-sized passenger car and the TN360 mini-truck in Taiwan. This facility, in collaboration with a local company in Taiwan, became Honda’s first production plant outside Japan. The company wanted to flex its muscles further and in 1982, it began the production of the Accord sedan in Ohio. This US plant became Honda’s first, own local subsidiary outside Japan and the Accord become the first passenger car produced on the American soil by a Japanese manufacturer.
Thereon, Honda has never looked back and has grown exponentially by expanding its reach to Asia, Europe, South America and Australia. The fact that the company reached the 10 crore-unit milestone in cumulative automobile production in September 2016 is a further testament to the same.
