Honda India to bestow diesel cars in India

Published On Oct 03, 2011 06:37 PM By Vikas

Do in Rome what the Romans do or do in India what the Indians do. It seems Honda India has adopted the latter statement well in time. The Japanese car maker, Honda Motors is working hand-in-hand with engineers from Honda's former F1 program from its research team in Japan to develop diesel engines specific to markets like India. Sooner or later, Indian car market can see diesel variant of Honda City, Honda Brio and even diesel Honda Jazz.

Most of the global markets are seeing fairly good demand of petrol cars except India where the fuel prices are so volatile that a paradigm shift is seen in favour of diesel cars. The craze for diesel four-wheelers is so high that all old and new players in car industry are revising their tried and tested formulas and mulling over bringing diesel cars in India. Honda being no exception has announced that diesel engines are being developed by the company for India. However, Jnaneswar Sen, Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) at Honda India, who broke this news, was secretive as to when exactly these diesel products will roll out in India.

Currently, Honda offers six models in India, namely Honda Brio, Honda Jazz, Honda City, Honda Civic, Honda CR-V and Honda Accord. Out of these 6, European variants of the Honda Civic, Honda CR-V and Honda Accord already feature powerful common rail, turbo diesel engines. So, only three of Honda's six cars in India actually need brand new diesel engines developed from scratch. Honda City facelift is on the cards now. However, it is uncertain that within such a short span new Honda City sedan will feature a diesel engine or not. Only time can answer as to when Honda Motors comes up with small capacity diesel engines for its Indian bread-and-butter product line up.
