Got sick of cloudy headlights in your car? we have a simple solution to restore it to its former glory. As the time passes, headlamps of the vehicle get oxidized resulting in a cloudy and hazy appearance. Nowadays, automakers offer plastic lens in the headlamp unit and prolonged exposure to sun take its toll on the lens. You can delay it by parking in the shade or by using car cover but you cannot stop it. Here's a simple and efficient way of restoring the lens of your headlight – you wont believe a simple white toothpaste can get the job done for you, saving your few bucks!
The headlight lens of the vehicle is made up of hard tempered polycarbonate plastic; long gone are the days of glass. However, manufacturer provides a very thin protective coating on it to prevent it from UVs but it faded away gradually. Exposure to sunlight oxidizes the upper layer of the lens which attract dirt and oil from the environment, forming a hard yellowish layer over it. It just not looks old and dingy but reduces the illuminating capacity of your headlights. It's a major safety issue as it obstructs some of the reflection from your headlight. Surprisingly, 80 percent of the accidents in night are somehow related to vision.
How to restore the headlights using toothpaste
- Firstly, clean off the headlight with water removing the dirt and debris over it.
- Grab a white toothpaste, you can also go for a toothpaste with whitening granules which might help better in removing the oxidized film.
- Apply the toothpaste evenly on the surface, increase the volume on largely affected areas.
- Take a wet towel apply some toothpaste on it and start rubbing the surface gently and increase the pace gradually.
- Swirl, upside-down, circular, rub in all possible directions you can! Make sure you avoid rubbing the unit surroundings.
- Rub it for like 15-20 minutes, it depends on the condition of your headlights.
- Leave it for 5 minutes after rubbing.
- Wash the headlights with a fresh towel and you will see the results instantaneously.
This is the simple and economical step to clear off the oxidation from your headlights. However, you may find headlight cleanser kit in the market or a professional mechanic may do the job for you; opting for both the options will call for loosing a few bucks.
