After having had a monopoly in the micro-SUV space since October 2021, the Tata Punch has a direct rival in the form of the Hyundai Exter, launched in July 2023. In just a month since its market introduction, the Hyundai SUV was reported to have gathered more than 50,000 bookings. But has it been able to affect the demand for the Punch? Let’s take a look at the sales of both petrol-only micro-SUVs over the last two months, and their current wait times.
A Sales Recap
Model |
July 2023 |
August 2023 |
Hyundai Exter |

7,430 units |
Tata Punch |

As we can clearly see, the Punch has had the edge over its prime competitor in the number of units sold in July and August 2023. Tata has consistently dispatched over 10,000 units of the Punch while the sales numbers of the Exter have hovered around 7,000-odd units. The Punch also got the addition of a CNG variant and sunroof following the arrival of the Hyundai Exter. Another potential advantage the Punch may enjoy over its rival is in terms of the monthly production capacity.

It’s the Tata SUV which comes out on top when availability of the two models is considered. You will have to wait a fair bit more to take delivery of the Exter. That said, neither is readily available in any major city at the moment. Moreover, the wait time for each model varies depending on the variant and colour chosen.
