The petrol engines of the Grand i10 Nios and Swift are quite identical in their output but is it the same in the real world? We find out

While the world may be going gaga over SUVs, the likes of Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios and Maruti Swift haven't forgotten the mantra of bringing customers to the showroom. These cars are compact, sporty, and offer a world of convenience. In this comparison, we are going to focus on the ‘sporty’ element. We compare the petrol manual variants of the two cars to find out which one offers better acceleration and braking performance in different scenarios. But before we get to that, let’s take a look at the engine specs of the two below:

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Displacement

1197cc

1197cc

Power

83PS

83PS

Torque

113Nm

113Nm

Transmission

5MT/5AMT

5MT/ 5AMT

Claimed FE

20.7kmpl/20.5kmpl

21.21kmpl

Emission Type

BS6

BS6

So on paper, there is hardly any difference between the two cars. Their performance is the same on paper and it is only in terms of fuel efficiency that Swift takes a slight lead. However, this comparison is to test the real-world performance of the two cars and thus we will let their fuel efficiency take a back seat for now.

Performance Comparison

Acceleration and Roll-on Tests:

0-100kmph

30-80kmph

40-100kmph

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

13.04s

11.28s

22.06s

Maruti Swift

12.71s

10.46s

19.73s

The Swift has the Grand i10 Nios beat in all acceleration tests. Be it the 0-100kmph sprint from a standstill, or the roll-on tests from 30-80kmph in third gear, and 40-100kmph in fourth gear. In the 40-100kmph test, the Swift manages to outdo the Grand i10 Nios by more than 2 seconds—a feat that will reflect well on the highways.

Braking Distance:

100-0kmph

80-0kmph

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

44.67m

28.06m

Maruti Swift

47.37m

30m

While the Grand i10 Nios maybe beat in the engine department, it comes into its own when braking. When braking from 100-0kmph, the Grand i10 Nios stops almost 3 metres quicker, which is almost a small car length! When coming to a stand still from 80kmph, the Grand i10 Nios once again manages to stop almost 2 metres before the Swift.

Verdict

While the Swift may reach higher speeds, the Grand i10 Nios comes to a stop faster—two features required to extract performance from a car. Hence, the Swift is a better option for you if straight line speed is your priority, but if stopping for a corner takes precedence, pick the Grand i10 Nios.
