The C-Class gets a new set of petrol and diesel engines and some cosmetic updates
Mercedes-Benz is set to bring the C-Class facelift to India in October 2018. It receives subtle changes on the outside which bring it aesthetically closer to the S-Class. On the inside, there are new wood trims and an updated infotainment system and instrument cluster. Let’s delve into the details of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the following pictures.
Design
The changes to the front are limited, with most of them being dealt only to the bumpers. While the front grille remains unchanged the headlamps receive a slight tweak in their layout, with multi-beam technology on offer for the first time on the C-Class. The 84 LEDs light up the road ahead like a runway without blinding the oncoming traffic. The optional UltraRange front lamps can throw light upto 650m on the road ahead.
Mercedes-Benz has left the sides almost unchanged. But make no mistake, it still looks pleasing to the eye, especially with the drooping bonnet and a swooping C-pillar which lend it a curvy profile. There’s a choice of 16”, 17”, 18” alloy wheels to choose from.
(Pictured: C 43 AMG) The facelift has certainly added the wow factor to the C-Class. Special mention is deserved by those rear tail lamps with their crystalline effect.
There will be three new colours to choose from: Mojave Silver and Emerald Green. Another Matte Grey shade is reserved for the coupe and cabriolets.
The interiors come with an optional 10.25” centrally mounted floating infotainment system and a 12.3” digital instrument console which can relay information related to even the nerdy stuff like G-forces and boost pressure. Check out the picture below.
The dashboard design has slight updates. Apart from the piano black trims, it also gets non-lacquered wood finish such as open pore brown walnut and anthracite oak on the central console. These save the interior from fingerprints and scratches without sacrificing sophistication.
There will be two new BSVI-compliant diesel engines coming from the OM654 four-cylinder group. One will be a 1951cc motor on the C220 d, making 194PS of power and 360Nm of torque. The other and the more powerful one will be available on the C 300 d, developing 245PS and 500Nm. Both will receive a 9-speed transmission sending power to the rear wheels. The more powerful version goes on sale first.
The 2018 C-Class will also receive two new turbo-petrol engines. The smaller 1.5-litre version receives mild-hybrid support and in return puts out 184PS of power, same as the outgoing 2.0-litre unit. The torque of 280Nm is spread across a wider band but is lower than the 300Nm available previously.
The more potent one here is the 2.0-litre petrol motor on the C300, which can produce 258PS of power and 370Nm of torque, allowing it a claimed time of 5.9 seconds for the 0-100kmph sprint. Dial in the Sport+ mode and the exhaust note amplifies for an engaging experience.
So, should you wait for what you see in the picture above? Well, definitely yes! It’s going to be loaded and will be bringing in some first-in-segment tech. At the same time, we expect its prices to rise by around Rs 1.5 lakh over the existing C-Class depending on the variants.
