Recent months have demonstrated a considerable fall in the car sales as evident from the sales reports of the top three automobile companies of India viz Maruti India, Hyundai India and Tata India. These companies have jointly registered a fall of 4.3 per cent from a sales count of 1.27 Lakh cars in June 2010 to 1.22 Lakh cars in June 2011.

The factors that can be attributed for the loss faced by Maruti India can be the 13 days strike at the company's Manesar facility that has cost Maruti India a loss of 12,400 car units as well as another probable reason could be the halted production due to the planned shutdowns at the company's Gurgaon and Manesar facility. Sales statistics revealed that Maruti India alone accounted for a loss of 3.8 per cent from a sales figure of 72,812 cars in June 2010 to 70,020 cars in June 2011.

Due to strike at Manesar facility, which is the main hub for the production of Maruti SX4 and Maruti Swift Dzire, the sales of these two cars faced a fall of 60.4 per cent, in addition to this, Maruti 800 also accounted for a loss of 12.8%. Maruti India's export also followed the downward trajectory accounting for a fall of 32.7 per cent from 15,279 cars in June 2010 to 10,278 in June 2011, however, The only segment where Maruti India was able to maintain its flagship and ramp up production by 2.3 per cent from 15,279 cars in June 2010 to 52,599 cars in June 2011, was the A2 segment ruled by Maruti Alto, Maruti Wagon-R, Maruti Estilo, Maruti Swift and Maruti Ritz.

Tata Motors India also faced considerable losses this year, demonstrating a significant fall from 27,811 car units sold in June 2010 to 21,993 car units sold in June 2011 thereby accounting for a loss of 21 per cent. Sales graph of Tata Nano, Tata Indica, Tata Indigo demonstrated a downward slope accounting to the sales count of 5,451 cars, 8,188 cars and 4,882 cars thereby registering a loss of 20 per cent, 9 per cent and 35 per cent respectively. Tata Safari and Tata Aria also witnessed a loss of 4 per cent to 3,472 cars.

In contrast to Maruti India and Tata India, Hyundai India has registered a growth of 11 per cent in the domestic market. However if taken past years records together, Hyundai faced overall loss as evident from the sales figure of 2009, 2010 and 2011 which are 23,503, 27,366 and 30,402 respectively. Export segment also showed an accent of 17.2 per cent accounting to 22,129 car sales in June 2011.  Hyundai’s director (sales & marketing) Arvind Saxena gives the credit for the increased sales to the immense success of their model Hyundai Verna.
