According to the Australian website, Drive, the Jeepster name for the baby crossover is claimed by a dealer who got to see this car. The name Jeepster was first used for the Willys Overland model developed between 1948 and 1950, and the last time it was seen on a Jeep Concept car revealed at the 1998-99 Detroit Motor Show.
The baby crossover will be based on the five-door Fiat 500X, which will also underpin one more product under Fiat's badge. The vehicle will be made available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive options. The Jeepster crossover will be a B-segment SUV and will come in both diesel and petrol guise. The same will also make its way to the Indian car market by 2015.
For Indian buyers, the small SUV will be developed at the Chrysler's R7D centre in Chennai. The production of the Jeepster will commence in late 2014 at the company's Melfi plant, and will be sold worldwide from 2015. It will be positioned under the Wrangler.
