Jobs in automobile sector subsides

Published On Oct 03, 2011 05:21 PM By Vidyadhar

The very elite auto industry of India is witnessing a morose hiring in 2011-12. A diminution of 22% is witnessed in recruitment of new employees this fiscal probably due to saving of low margins on fewer car sales this year. However, the coming months may hopefully see some new hiring in car companies. Recently, Maruti India refused to reinstate 44 regular employees at its Manesar facility on disciplinary grounds. According to a research, just 724 people were hired in the automobile industry during April-August, 2011, compared to 1,022 in the corresponding year-ago, translating into a 22% decline.

Surging petrol prices and peaky lending rates are affecting car sales negatively and thus recruitments. Overall, hiring activity in the automobile industry declined by one-fourth compared to last year's hiring activity. R Sethuraman, Hyundai India's Senior VP (Finance and Corporate Affairs) said that the job scenario will be robust in the coming months. New positions, though limited, will be created as a result of expansion of capacities and entry of new companies. The rest will be lateral and upward progression. Even Dhananjay Nair, GM, HR, Ford India supported these sentiments. On a positive note he said that the upcoming festival season will provide a boost to sales and the job market will be lucrative in the remaining months of 2011.

There is a possibility of an increase in hiring activity in the new financial year, because the auto industry can't stagnate. About new recruitments, Sethuraman said that recruiting talented individuals that are able to gel with an organisation's culture remains a major challenge. Attracting the right talent would be the key to success, according to Nair. Sales, marketing and manufacturing will be the sectors witnessing boost in the coming times and hiring would preferably be these segments only. Candidates having a sound technical background, flexibility and positive attitude, with an alert and creative mind, are more likely to get a job.
