Lutz Pathfinder, A Driverless Car on the Streets of UK

In order to encourage the trend of driverless cars, the government of Britain has launched the trials for autonomous vehicles. Four English cities- London, Coventry, Bristol and Milton Keynes are chosen for the trial of cars that runs without a driver.

On the launching of trials, UK transport minister Claire Perry said, “Driverless vehicle technology has the potential to be a real game-change on the UK's roads, altering the face of motoring in the most fundamental of ways and delivering major benefits for road safety, social inclusion, emissions and congestion."

The government is also planning to change the country's Highway Code so that driverless cars can be tested on roads for public use. With this, the British government is looking forward to become the world leader in driverless cars. Apart from bending and changing the rules, the government has backed this project by funding it with 19 million pounds (INR 181 Crore).

"The projects we are now funding in Greenwich, Bristol, Milton Keynes and Coventry will help to ensure we are world-leaders in this field and able to benefit from what is expected to be a 900 billion pounds industry by 2025," he said.

Autonomous Lutz Pathfinder 'pods' can be seen driving in the public areas in Milton Keynes, central England, Coventry and south-east England. Lutz Pathfinder is a electrically-powered, two-seater vehicle which carries 19 sensors, cameras, radar and Lidar- a remote sensing technology that measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser and analyzing the reflected light.
