The other names could potentially be used for special editions of the Thar, or to adopt a new naming strategy for the variants (like Tata)
The Mahindra Thar 5 door has been one of the most anticipated SUVs, for over a year now. Its launch has been scheduled for 2024, and the SUV was also caught testing in a closer-to-production guise recently. It now seems like Mahindra is in the process of finalising a name for the production version of the Thar 5-door, and has recently trademarked 7 names.
What Names Have Been Trademarked?
Mahindra has filed for trademarks for the following names:
-
Thar Armada
-
Thar Cult
-
Thar Rex
-
Thar Roxx
-
Thar Savannah
-
Thar Gladius
-
Thar Centurion

What Would Be The Best Pick?
Of the 7 seven names, the ‘Thar Armada’ is the top contender, as the new name for the upcoming 5-door Mahindra SUV. If Mahindra does settle on the same, it still leaves 6 other Thar-based trademarks free to use.
We believe the carmaker could use these names for the Thar 5 door’s variants. Tata recently rebranded its variant nomenclature with the facelifted Nexon, Harrier, and Safari SUVs from just letters to proper words. It might also use some of the newly trademarked identities to launch new variants in the Thar 3-door model’s lineup as well.
That said, these trademarks might also hint at the possibility of Mahindra rolling out special editions of both the 3-door and 5-door versions of the Thar, something similar to what Jeep has done with the Wrangler SUV in the international markets.
Powertrains And Launch Timeline
The Mahindra Thar 5-door is expected to get the same 2-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines as its 3-door iteration, likely with increased outputs. Both engines should get manual and automatic transmission options. The Thar 5 door might also offer a choice of both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and 4-wheel-drive (4WD).
We expect the more practical Thar to go on sale in the first half of 2024 at an expected starting price of Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). It will be a bigger alternative to the Maruti Jimny, while also going up against the soon-to-be-launched 5-door Force Gurkha.
