Mahindra is now busy to build an all-new SUV from scratch with an eye on foreign markets. The company is ready to invest Rs 700-800 crore in the new product that is expected to be rolled out before the next fiscal-end. M&M has taken up the challenge to build its own new global brand for foreign markets. M&M V-C and MD Anand Mahindra had earlier said that the Indian utility vehicle major was not worried over the JLR loss but rather set to compete with the SUV maker.
Pawan Goenka, who is the president for automotive division of M&M, said that the new SUV will be manufactured at the company's Chakan plant in Maharashtra and this product will come at a premium to the Mahindra Scorpio in terms of pricing and positioning. Mahindra said that the crossovers that offer riding comfort of a car while carrying the macho looks of an SUV are designed for light off-road capability. BMW X3, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rouge and Toyota Highlander are some of the popular crossovers.
The basic body structure for an SUV would remain the same either the vehicle provides a right-hand or left-hand drive, meet varying safety requirements, or run on different fuels. The product will also be sold in Indian market as well and the new product could be priced at Rs 10 lakh.
