    We find out which of these machismo off-roaders of similar size is better at managing their fuel consumption

    The Toyota Fortuner and the Mahindra Scorpio N are two big, feature-loaded and powerful SUVs in the Indian market right now. While they go about it in different ways and are operating on different price points, they appeal to the same buyer. Both these SUVs get the choice of petrol and diesel engines with manual and automatic transmissions.  As high-mileage vehicles, both are expected to cover a lot of kilometres between refills. So, we subjected the diesel automatic 4X2 variants of the top-spec Fortuner Legender and Scorpio N to our real-world efficiency tests.

    It’s no surprise that the SUV with the larger engine and more performance was less frugal in both city and highway driving conditions. The Scorpio N delivers an extra 2kmpl in the city but only 1kmpl more on the highway.

Your fuel efficiency can reach up to 15kmpl when you drive on highways more with the Scorpio N, about 1.3kmpl more than the Fortuner; normal city driving gets a mileage of 13.15kmpl on the Mahindra’s SUV while the Fortuner in the same conditions gives only 11.41kmpl.

    The base-spec Fortuner costs Rs 8.69 lakh more than the top-spec Scorpio N. While the Toyota SUV gets a bigger, more powerful engine, the Mahindra is the clear winner when it comes to fuel efficiency.
