- SsangYong E100 could share its powertrain with the Mahindra eXUV300.
- This platform can accommodate up to 280kW motors (380PS) and 80kWh battery packs.
- The powertrain is also capable of holding a twin-motor setup.
- Mahindra eXUV300 launch likely in late-2021.
Mahindra’s South Korean partner, SsangYong has teased its upcoming E100 electric car. The E100 is an electric version of the SsangYong Tivoli which shares its platform with the Mahindra XUV300.
Slated to launch in the first half of 2021, the SsangYong E100 bears major design similarities with the eXUV300 which was revealed at Auto Expo 2020. It gets an overall silhouette similar to the donor Tivoli but with some design upgrades such as shark fin scale-like elements. Other changes include an aluminium bonnet and sealed front grille complemented by updated headlights and fog lamp design.
Mahindra and SsangYong have been developing synergies for new platforms and powertrains. It’s natural to expect the E100 to be based on the Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture (MESMA 350volt powertrain) which powers the eXUV300 as well. Mahesh Babu, CEO of Mahindra Electric, has said the design-ready MESMA 350volt powertrain will be made in India for the world.
The Mahindra MESMA platform is capable of accommodating motor sizes ranging from 60kW (82PS) to 280kW (380PS), dual-motor arrangements, and battery sizes of up to 80 kWh. For reference, the Tata Nexon EV gets a 129PS/245Nm electric motor which is paired with a 30.2kWh battery pack. The Tata gets a claimed range of 312km and a 0-100kmph sprint time of 9.9 seconds.
Mahindra has not made any official announcements but the eXUV300 could derive power from motors similar to the Nexon EV. The Mahindra eXUV300 is expected to launch in the second half of 2021 for a starting price of Rs 15 lakh. It will go up against the Nexon EV.
