    Key Takeaways

    Maruti Baleno

    • With sales of close to 19,000 units, the Maruti Baleno rose to the top and took the first place from the one of the usual table-toppers: the Maruti Wagon R. With an increasing month-on-month (MoM) demand, Maruti sold over 2,500 more units of its premium hatchback compared to April 2023.

    Maruti Swift

    • Maruti Swift stood in the same place as the previous month but its sales declined by over 1,400 units.

    • The Maruti Wagon R fell to third place with a loss in sales of over 4,000 units. Compared to May last year, its year-over-year (YoY) sales have also dropped by 3 per cent.

    Hyundai Creta

    • The Hyundai Creta moved one spot up and surpassed the frequent best-seller, the Tata Nexon, with total sales close to 14,500 units. The Creta is currently the best-selling model in its segment with its YoY sales witnessing a growth of 32 per cent.

    Tata Nexon

    • On the fifth spot, the Tata Nexon saw a drop in both monthly and yearly sales figures. It is worth noting that these sales figures also include the numbers of the Tata Nexon EV Prime and the Nexon EV Max, which has put the Nexon a position above its rival, the Brezza.

    Maruti Brezza

    • Following the Nexon was the Maruti Brezza with sales of over 13,000 units. The subcompact SUV’s monthly sales increased by over 1,500  units.

    • The Maruti Eeco also witnessed growth in both monthly and yearly sales figures with May 2023 sales of close to 13,000 units.

    • With sales of over 11,300 units, the Maruti Dzire saw a rise in its monthly sales figure, but its YoY sales dropped by 2 per cent.

    Tata Punch

    • Tata Punch was at the ninth spot on the list, with sales of a little more than 11,000 units in May 2023. Sales of the micro SUV increased in both monthly (190 units) and yearly (883 units) figures.

    • While the yearly sales of the Maruti Ertiga dropped by 14 per cent, its monthly sales nearly doubled, making it the only MPV to make it to this list.

    Hyundai Venue

    • Another offering from the subcompact SUV segment in this list was the Hyundai Venue, which witnessed a rise of 23 per cent in yearly sales. That said, its monthly sales dropped by over 100 units.

    Maruti Fronx

    • Maruti Fronx, a recent entrant in the sub-4m crossover space, continued to witness growth in sales. The crossover SUV was a few units shy of the 10,000-unit sales mark.

    • While the Maruti Alto has usually had a place in the upper half of this list, its sales have dwindled in the past few months. One of the reasons for this could be the recent discontinuation of the Alto 800. Now, the carmaker's entry-level hatchback is the Alto K10.

    Mahindra Scorpio N
    Mahindra Scorpio Classic

    • The second-last model in this list was the Mahindra Scorpio, which comprised the sales of both the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic. Yearly sales of the Scorpio range went up by a mammoth 114 per cent thanks to the launch of the more feature-rich Scorpio N in June 2022.

    Maruti Grand Vitara

    • In fifteenth place, the Maruti Grand Vitara’s monthly sales increased by 100-odd units, almost taking the cumulative sales figure to 9,000.
