Maruti Discontinues The S-Cross In India; Replaced By The Grand Vitara

The S-Cross was a compact crossover rivaling the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos

  • Maruti has removed the S-Cross from its Nexa website, confirming the discontinuation.

  • It debuted back in 2015 as a premium diesel-only compact crossover.

  • The S-Cross received a mid-life upgrade featuring a facelift and powertrain change.

  • It was equipped with a 103PS 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine at the time of its discontinuation.

  • The S-Cross has been replaced by the more premium Grand Vitara.

Maruti has delisted the S-Cross from the Nexa website, which confirms that the carmaker has pulled the plug on its crossover. It debuted back in 2015 with a starting price of Rs 8.34 lakh and was the first car to be sold through Maruti’s premium Nexa outlet.

The Maruti S-Cross, in its seven years on sale, received a handful of updates such as a facelift and some other minor upgrades. While it grew outdated in recent years with low monthly sales figures, the arrival of the more premium, and fuel-efficient Grand Vitara sealed its eventual discontinuation.

The S-Cross was first introduced with two Fiat-sourced diesel engines: a 1.6-litre and a 1.3-litre unit. It didn’t get a diesel-automatic transmission at all, which was another disadvantage as its rivals offered the option. In 2020, with the BS6 transition, the S-Cross got the 1.5-litre petrol engine that came with manual and automatic transmissions.

Now that the Grand Vitara is here, Maruti has a tougher competitor for the compact SUVs. With its unique highlights such as the highly fuel-efficient strong-hybrid powertrain (27.97kmpl claimed) and an all-wheel drivetrain, the Grand Vitara is off to a good start. The carmaker has already dispatched over 5,000 units of the SUV in September and is observing a 5-6 month waiting period for the same.
