The largest car maker of India Maruti is planning to park in Gujarat for manufacturing Maruti cars in India. This has challenged Tamil Nadu to become the Detroit of India. Maruti Suzuki India has taken the decision of building a manufacturing unit at a place near Ahmedabad. It is likely to be closest to Sanand. As per the sources, Sanand will be a plant where 250,000 cars will be manufactured annually. However, some issues need to be sorted out first. General Motors and Tata Motors already have their plant in Halol and Sanand respectively. It is believed that this proposed plant by Maruti will be primarily for exports of Maruti Swift, Maruti A-Star and Maruti Estilo.

The capacity of the Manesar and Gurgaon plants of Maruti has capability of manufacturing 1.2 million units. According to an sources, a 500-acre plot has been finalized by Maruti India that is next to Sanand (Tata Motor’s Nano plant). However, it cannot be said for sure that this land will be procured. Maruti Suzuki has sought for concessions similar to those that were granted to Tata Motors, when it shifted Nano plant from West Bengal to Gujarat. It is believed to be ideal location as this place has direct road links with Kandla and Mundra ports.
