Maruti’s Manesar Facility Employees Demand Fivefold Hike in Basic Salary

For Maruti India, the trouble never seems far away. Just when the company was seeing a high and rejoicing the demand, its new entrant MPV has bagged, news have come out that Maruti workers at the Manesar plant are now demanding a fivefold hike in their basic salaries ahead of the negotiation time set by the management of the company. As soon as the workers association namely- MSWU( Maruti Suzuki Workers’ Union) was formed, the  workers have come up with a list of 20 demands that they want the management to consider rather fulfill while coming to a final settlement on the three year wage contract.

Apart from the increase in the basic salaries, the workers are reported to demand a dearness allowance linked to the basic salary instead of the amount that is at present given to them.  When contacted, MSWU General Secretary Sarabjeet Singh said: "We have submitted our demand list to the company management on April 18. It has about 20-22 different points." Where Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Managing Executive Officer (Administration) S Y Siddiqui decided not to comment, MSWU General Secretary Sarabjeet Singh stated that the union has submitted a demand list to Maruti Suzuki India on April 18 and the list is about 20-22 points long.   However he declined to throw some enlightenment on the demands as the Union has not yet started with the negotiations.

The other demands of the workers include to increase the number of privilege and casual leaves, the company to provide conveyance within 100 kms from the facility and help the employees in getting housing facilities. According to an employee at the Manesar plant, a permanent worker with a designation of Junior Associate-1 (JA-1) draws a total salary of about Rs 15,000-17,000 a month. As per reports an employee at the Manesar plant, who is hired at the Junior Associate-1 post, is given remuneration of about 15-17 K a month. The distribution goes like basic pay 5,000 with 1600 of travelling allowance, HRA is around 1,400  and 200 for laundry and a DA of Rs 150  The major part of near about 7000 to 9000 is variable income depending on the performance of the employee.
