Mercedes Benz’ second shift to commence soon

German luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz is soon going to commence its second shift at the Chakan plant. A top company official said that the company has invested around Rs 200 crore to meet the increased demand. He said that they will be beginning the second shift operations soon at the Chakan plant. The plant has an installed capacity of 5,000 units per shift a year, said Debashis Mitra, Director Mercedes-Benz India Management Board -Member (Sales and Marketing).

The Chakan plant of the company has been set up on a 100 acre land. It has the capacity to be expanded further in future. Formally, the plant was inaugurated on February 24, 2009. It is among the fastest green-field operations created in the country. On the launch of Merecedes Benz SLS AMG, Mitra said that the company has received 10 orders so far.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMG is powered by a 6.2 litre engine and boasts of a maximum speed of 317 km per hour. Regarding the future plans of the company, Mitra said that the company would launch a new model in the SUV segment this year. At present, the company has 'M' Class priced at Rs 50 lakh and 'GL Class' in the Rs 65-lakh category. The company has launched 16 models in the last seven months itself.
