MG Motor’s parent company, SAIC, formed a joint venture (JV) with JSW Group to expand MG’s operations in India in late 2023. Fast forward to March 2024 and the JV has been officially named 'JSW MG Motor India Private Limited.' With this new identity, MG has revealed its future Indian plans which include not just more EVs, but also plug-in hybrids for India.
Plenty Of MGs To Come
The carmaker plans to introduce one new car every three to six months, starting from September this year. Two new models are slated for launch this calendar year itself, but their details are yet to be confirmed. As per the MG 2.0 plans, all these new cars will be manufactured in India and will also be exported to some other global markets.
MG Cyberster India Debut
As part of the announcement, MG also revealed the Cyberster concept, its 2-seater all-electric roadster that was first unveiled in China in early 2023. Given MG’s origins as a British carmaker best known for its small convertible sports car, the Cyberster could be the brand’s future icon.
Pushing For Locally Made Plug-in Hybrids
The joint venture with JSW Group will help MG Motor India extensively localise its upcoming models which shall help in pricing them aggressively. Along with that, the partnership also has a big focus on clean mobility and thus plans to introduce plug-in hybrid cars (PHEVs) in India. Even though there has been no government incentives for this technology in India, skipping to pure EVs instead, the PHEV technology has great potential while the EV market matures, especially with regards to an expansive charging infrastructure. The joint venture will also lead to an increase in production capacity at MG’s Halol facility in Gujarat, from the current 1 lakh+ cars to up to 3 lakh units annually.

JSW & MG Joint Venture Highlights
JSW now holds a 35 percent stake in this joint venture, while SAIC is supporting it with advanced technology and products. The partnership is aimed at undertaking new initiatives for the Indian auto market, including local sourcing, improving charging infrastructure, expanding production capacity, and developing and introducing new vehicles with a focus on green mobility.
SAIC and JSW also plan to work closely in creating a smart and sustainable automotive ecosystem in India to produce connected EVs and ICE vehicles. The JV is meant to optimise the automotive expertise of SAIC for new models, and leverage the JSW Group’s presence in the B2B and B2C sectors to establish a robust supply chain.
More About The Cyberster Concept
First unveiled in concept form back in 2021, the Cyberster concept aims to be a Tesla Roadster-rivalling electric sports car. MG has plans to debut it in European markets in 2024 itself and has already showcased the car at events in the UK.
