The battery will weigh the same as the current battery of the ZS EV at 250kg

  • New battery pack will push the range to north of 500km.

  • MG will use better battery tech that will allow the same cells to hold more amount of charge.

  • It will be ready for production in two years.

  • MG hasn’t revealed the charging time we can expect with the bigger battery pack.

MG recently unveiled the ZS EV in India. The electric SUV offers a claimed range of 340km on a full charge. Soon, that figure could go north of 500km as MG is developing a bigger battery pack for the ZS EV.

It will be rated at 73kWh and despite being denser than the current 44.5kWh battery pack, it is expected to weigh the same. MG will do so by using cells that can hold more charge inside of them. For reference, the current battery pack weighs 250kg.

The bad news here is that this battery pack is still a couple of years away and MG estimates it should be production-ready in two years from now. So, if you wanted the ZS EV but weren’t happy with the range it offered, you can get one with a longer range sometime in late 2021 or early 2022.

A bigger battery pack would ideally mean that charging times will also increase. The current 44.5kWh battery pack takes under 50 minutes to charge from 0 to 80 per cent using DC 50kW fast charging. Using a 7.4kW AC wall charger, the ZS EV can be fully charged in 6-8 hours and if you need to use the emergency portable charger supplied with the car, it will take up to 19 hours using a 15A socket.

Safe to say, the charging times for the bigger battery will be more than the ones stated above when using the same medium for charging. Are you excited about the ZS EV now or would you rather wait it out for the bigger battery pack? Let us know in the comments below.
