The engine is the most powerful unit ever fitted in a Mini
Back in October last year, Mini unwrapped the second-generation Countryman. While European sales of the new car begin next month, Mini has just revealed the performance-spec John Cooper Works (JCW) Countryman.
The 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-petrol mill used in the JCW Countryman is the most powerful engine ever used in a Mini. Featuring model-specific pistons, a large charge-air cooler and an additional radiator, the motor belts out 231PS of power @ 5,000-6,000rpm (13PS more than its predecessor) and 350Nm of torque @ 1,450-4,500rpm with the output driven to all four wheels as standard.
The end result is a top speed of 234kmph and a claimed 0-100kmph time of 6.5 seconds, whether you opt for the standard 6-speed manual gearbox or the optional 8-speed automatic with paddle-shifters. For reference, it’s just under a second faster than the 192PS Cooper S Countryman ALL4.
Apart from the higher performance stats, the JCW Countryman also gets improved cornering ability and stopping power, thanks to the sports suspension, 18-inch JCW-spec light alloy wheels and Brembo sports brakes. Additionally, the car sports the John Cooper Works aerodynamics kit with larger air intakes up front.
Standard features on the car include the Sport/Mid/Green drive modes (these alter the behavior of the steering, throttle response, transmission, dampers and even the exhaust sound), LED headlamps, JCW sports seats and the Radio MINI Visual Boost. Like the standard Countryman, this is a five-seater and gets a 450-litre boot that’s expandable to 1,390 litres with the rear seats down.
The Mini John Cooper Works Countryman will make its global debut in April 2017 at the Shanghai Motor Show. While the standard Countryman is likely to make its India-debut in mid-2017, it remains to be seen if the performance-spec model will be offered as well.
