Mitsubishi Lancer Will Be Back As A Crossover

Modified On May 01, 2018 12:09 PM By Dhruv Attri

The upcoming Lancer could be based on the CMF C/D platform

When Mitsubishi pulled the plug on the Lancer, it left a void among several enthusiasts all over the world. However, the popular nameplate is set to make a comeback soon. Sadly, Mitsubishi will ditch the traditional sedan form for a more popular crossover SUV or hatchback bodystyle.

Recently, Mitsubishi's chief designer Tsunehiro Kunimoto informed a British media house that the Lancer will be rejoining the Pajero in the company's portfolio. The design boss also revealed that the upcoming Lancer SUV/Crossover will bear resemblance to the e-Evolution crossover that was showcased at the last year's Tokyo Motor Show. The new Lancer is expected to be based upon the CMF (Common Module Family) C/D platform that was developed by Renault and Nissan. This platform underpins the Nissan X-Trail and is also likely to form the basis of the next (fourth) generation Mitsubishi Outlander.

This platform is capable of being equipped with a four-wheel drive system and Mitsubishi will also be looking to integrate its hybrid systems into the Lancer crossover. “Just because it's C-segment doesn't mean it has to be a very conventional hatchback,” explained Kunimoto. This means the next-gen Lancer could well be a hatchback but with beefed up body proportions which would make it compete with crossovers such as the Honda HR-V.

Currently, Mitsubishi has only two offerings in India - the Outlander and the Pajero. However, the brand still enjoys a cult following in the country. So do you want the upcoming Mitsubishi Lancer in India? If the company decides to launch it here, we think it could be positioned as a premium cross-hatch with a price tag upwards of Rs 12 lakh, which will help it create a segment of its own. Will such a cross-hatch work in India? Will you be interested in buying such a vehicle? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
