BMW Malaysia has finally introduced the facelifted version of its compact SUV, BMW X1 that saw its world debut in May 2012. The similar vehicle will hit Indian shores as well probably in the first quarter of 2013. The vehicle however has been launched in the petrol variant out there, but the Indian version will be offered in diesel version as well. The Malaysian version of new BMW X1 gets the 2.0-litre turbo petrol mill and an eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the six-speed AT from the earlier generation.

In India as well, we are expecting the similar petrol engine to be fitted with the next generation BMW X1, while the existing 2.0-litre diesel engine will continue to power the new age BMW X1. Speaking about the new BMW X1, Dr. Gerhard Pils, Chief Executive Officer of BMW Group Malaysia said, “The BMW X1 features all the traits for which we at BMW are known for and matches them to current requirements and practicalities. The vehicle sets the benchmark for driver satisfaction and utility and continues to offer superior efficiency for both the consumer as well as the environment.”

Powered by the multi-award winning 2.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine with TwinScroll turbocharger, direct injection and Valvetronic which is capable of producing a maximum of 184hp and 270Nm of torque together with the BMW eight-speed automatic transmission with Auto Start/ Stop function. The premium compact crossover that’s capable of completing the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.7 seconds has an EU consumption standard of 6.7 litres per 100 km and emits a mere 157 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

The car also benefits from excellent steering ability thanks to the strict separation of steering from the vehicles drive train. Steering power is thus evenly distributed necessitating minimal steering angles which in turn allows the driver to actually develop a feel for road conditions and also received more direct feedback when cornering. As an added benefit, the electric power steering system helps to reduce fuel consumption on the already highly economical BMW X1 even further.

Moreover, the new BMW X1 also comes with ECO PRO Mode as standard. Through ECO PRO the new BMW X1 is geared towards optimised efficiency through the automated management of fuel consumption and even energy used by the car’s air conditioning and other features. The Bonus Range Display in the BMW X1’s on-board computer will show how much additional mileage the driver has gained from these energy saving measures.

In appearance, the new BMW X1 features stylish new design elements to give it a fresh and contemporary physical appeal. The front apron features redesigned air inlets and body contour lines as a nod to the design elements of the larger BMW X models. New twin circular headlights further reinforces the new BMW X1’s premium appeal and the car is given a fresh level of elegance with reduced reliance on plastic trim along the lower body edge and new exterior paint finishes and light alloy wheels for a dynamic sports appeal. Moving into the interior, the new BMW X1 features a redesigned centre console with an enhanced orientation towards the driver, premium quality materials as well as upgraded surfaces and control elements together with a new-look sports steering wheel to provide BMW customers with a superior sports premium ambience in the cabin.

Three full-size rear seats offer spacious comfort to passengers and further make the new BMW X1 a truly valued companion for long distance journeys. In addition the car features a 40/20/40-split rear seat backrest as standard, making the new BMW X1 the only vehicle in its segment to do so. Depending on passenger needs, each part can be folded down jointly or individually and each backrest element also has ten settings from which customers can adjust seating support angles. With the backrests in its normal position, the new BMW X1’s luggage compartment has the capacity to hold 420 litres which can be increased to as much as 1,350 litres with all three rear seat backrests folded down.

Available in exterior colours of Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Midnight Blue, Mineral Grey, Sparkling Bronze and Valencia Orange, and a choice of Nevada Beige Leather or Nevada Black Leather for the interior, the retail price (on the road, without insurance and with BMW Service + Repair Inclusive (BS+RI) for the new BMW X1 sDrive20i is RM 238,800
