Nissan has teased the automatic variant of its Terrano SUV via its social media pages. The AMT has been expected to feature on the Terrano ever since its brother from another family - the Renault Duster - received a facelift and with it, an AMT. Expected to launch in October, this teaser could mean that the launch could take place next week. This auto box in the Terrano will be the similar six-speed 'Easy-R' AMT unit which is used in the Duster, although it might lose the Easy-R moniker.
Nissan India's post reads, "Its time someone made driving less painful and more convenient. Stay tuned!"Although the post claims that Nissan is the first to introduce an automatic transmission in the SUV, it might actually be the last. Terrano’s biggest competitors like the Hyundai Creta and the Duster, both have automatic options in their lineups. Even from the segment below, SUVs like the Ford EcoSport and the Mahindra TUV300 have automatic transmissions on offer. The introduction of the AMT in the Terrano sure makes it a better contender in the segment. The sales, however, would largely depend on the pricing of the SUV, which Nissan needs to get right.
The Terrano comes with two engine options in three tunes. The lineup consists of a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel producing 85PS and 110PS respectively. All of these options are mated to a five-speed manual transmission and two-wheel drive. As there is no options for any AWD variant, the AMT will most likely be offered with the XL Plus and XV Premium variants. Price is expected to be about a lakh more than the corresponding manual variant.
