Over 10,000 bookings for BMW i3, i8 plug-in hybrid sold out for next year

BMW, the German luxury carmaker has announced that it has orders for nearly around 10,000 i3 electric cars. The deliveries for the vehicle has already been commenced, and the first slot of the hatch were delivered in Germany last week.

The company will launch its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car in the mid-2014. Interestingly, BMW has already recieved i8 pre-orders for its first year of availability. It is the second BMW's i-brand vehicle after the i3 electric hatchback.

BMW hasn't mentioned the exact numbers of i8s booked and its annual production units, but it specified that over 10,000 bookings for the i3 hatchback. In the coming months, the BMW i3 will be launched in other European markets. Next year, it will also be launched in the US, Japan, China and Korea. The company is also planning to introduce its i range in India, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

The BMW i3 features a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery which powers an electric motor that churns out 170bhp and 250Nm of top torque. It accelerates to 100kmph from standstill in mere 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of 150kmph. On a single charge, the i3 hatchback can run up to 130-160km.
