Maruti Suzuki’s Pakistan arm; the Pak-Suzuki Motor Company has asked the Pakistani government to approve the import of parts for the Maruti Suzuki Alto model range so as to reinstate the production of the Alto models. The Alto line-up has been at a standstill in Pakistan since July, 2012. The reason for this halt in production was due to a failure to meet the Euro-II emissions standards. India is currently the only Euro-II parts producer in the region.
According to a spokesperson for Pak-Suzuki Motor Company, the company requires 159 Alto parts which have been put into the government’s negative list. The company is talks with the Ministry of Commerce and has been assured that the parts will come off the list by December, 2012. According to sources, the vendors associated with the company face an estimated loss of Rs. 700 Crore annually due to the halt in production.
The company stated that these organisations and vendors employed over 12,000 people and had made investments of over Rs. 2 billion for the Alto. Additionally, the Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) has also asked the government to eliminate the list so that the 1.0-litre car segment can be filled with the Alto again.
